Paula, What can you tell me about this necklace?

What can you tell me about this necklace. Vicki

Hi Vicki,

The beads appear to be bench made melon and seed beads and the pendant is in the overlay style. It is not Hopi and whether it is Navajo or not is unclear. I don’t recognize the design or symbols on the front. I don’t recognize the hallmark, if that what it is, on the back.

It is Native American style. Whether it is Native American made, I could not say.

Perhaps others have seen something like this.

  1. Hi there!
Henry and I took a look at this – we’ve seen these before. If you tilt your head to the right, you can see a thunderbird. From the placement of the 2 loops on the back, this looks like it was originally a side piece on a larger necklace. It was meant to be strung along the side (kind of like a squash blossom), not at the bottom as it is now. Then the thunderbird would have looked right. There may have been 1 or 3 other pieces similar to this, and one larger central piece. From the style of the stamps and of the possible hallmark, it may have been made in the early 70’s. It does have the appearance of a Navajo made piece, but without any other proof, that’s just a good guess. This would have been a pretty big necklace; maybe someone restrung all the parts because it was just too big to wear!
